Verbs Followed by Gerunds

VERBS FOLLOWED BY GERUNDS

(PART- II)

From the discussion we have made in the previous blog GERUND, we may conclude that GERUND may be used as:

1) as subject of a sentence
2) after prepositions
3) after certain verbs and
4) in noun compounds.

Now let us give some examples of VERBS + GERUND sentences/ Verbs Followed by Gerunds:-

  • Try to avoid making him angry
  • She dreads getting old.
  • Do you enjoy teaching?
  • He narrowly escaped being run over.
  • He kept complaining.
  • Stop taking.
  • Is there anything here worth buying?
  • It’s no use arguing.
  • I couldn’t help laughing.
  • Always remember after ‘use ‘ and’ help ‘
  • Verb + ING should be used.
  • We should also remember that the verb ‘MIND ‘ is used chiefly in the negative and interrogative sentences.
  • Would you mind waiting a moment?
  • I don’t mind waiting.

SOME SPECIAL CASES:–

1)EXCUSE, FORGIVE, PARDON and PREVENT are used as :

Pronoun + preposition + GERUND
  • Forgive me for ringing you up so early.
  • I can’t prevent him from speaking to you.

2) After WOULD LIKE, WOULD LOVE, WOULD PREFER, WOULD HATE — use TO:

  • I would like to thank you.
  • She would love to have her own flat.
  • I would prefer to make my own way.
  • I would hate to live here.

3) REGRET TO SAY :- expressing something unpleasant or giving bad news.

I regret to say I don’t have much sympathy with you.

REGRET + GERUND:- to feel sorry about something already done.
I regret spending all the money.

4) REMEMBER/FORGET + TO :- first remember and then do the action.

  • I must remember to post the letter today.
  • The clothes are still dirty because I forgot to switch on the washing machine.
REMEMBER/FORGET + GERUND:-
  • first do the action and then remember it.
  • I can’t remember posting the letter.
  • I’ll never forget flying over the Himalayas.

5) NEED TO DO: has to do.

I need to get up early tomorrow.

NEED +GERUND:- needs to be done.

The grass needs cutting, it’s got very long.

We also know there is PRESENT PARTICIPLE with the same form VERB + ING. We will discuss this in our next BLOG.
